MacWorld Video Blog: Fighting for (Macbook) Air

I hit MacWorld 2008 with my friend Doug and we brought our video camera along. We never saw Randy Newman (or the Keynote) but we did meet some online celebrities, dance in a sound booth, and find out why we're not chic enough for female-centric laptop bags.

Friday 11/30: Apple iPod nano vs. Thursday 11/29: ASUS Eee PC Ultraportable Notebook Computer

Friday 11/30: Apple iPod nano

Yes, there are other portable media players that do more, are more hackable, or cost less money. But there's a reason iPods are so hot - they're easy to use, sound good, and look cool.

The new iPod nano is perhaps the slickest little iPod to date. It's super thin, holds enough music/photos/videos to keep you entertained for a few weeks before you have to update it, and is skip-proof enough to take with you to the gym or on a run.

Now it's got a super high-res screen that makes looking at photos and watching videos pretty bearable despite the tiny screen. And, hey, that tiny screen is a widescreen now! Trick. nano may not be an iPod Touch or iPhone, but it's a lot less expensive. Available in 4 and 8gb models and in several colors.

Thursday 11/29: ASUS Eee PC Ultraportable Notebook Computer

Used to be all the cool gadgets were small, thin, and light. Now you can add cheap (I mean, "inexpensive") to the short list. Asus' Eee PC is an ultraportable laptop that measures 8.9 x 6.5 x 1.4 inches, weighs 32 ounces and costs less than $400.

How'd they do it? For one, Asus built the Eee PC around a Linux operating system that avoids costly Windows licensing fees. While that means this might not be a great choice for a computer that will work with your corporate IT setup, it also means it's got a simple, effective interface for Web browsing, Email, and multimedia, and it's a hacker's delight.

Cooler than that, though, the Eee PC literally fits in many a purse or jacket pocket. It's about half the size of a 14" laptop computer and weighs half as much, too. With built-in WiFi and a 7" color display, it's the perfect laptop for taking notes in class or catching up on Email at the cafe - especially if you don't want to shell out three times as much for something more powerful like a MacBook.

iPhone Unlocking Video

The good is the iPhone is unlocked and works for voice calls on other GSM networks. The iPod works, the WiFi works, all that stuff works. The bad is it doesn't work with all EDGE data plans:

Unlock that iPhone? $45 Says You Can

Software unlocks for iPhone hit the market yesterday, and after doing a little research and a little emailing, we ponied up for one from freeit4less.com. They told us it might not arrive until later in the week ... and so far it hasn't arrived ... so we can't actually endorse the place just yet.

But they do have the lowest price going - $45 - and very responsive customer service via email, for whatever that's worth. Stay tuned ...

Jobs at All Things Digital: iPhone to Have 3G?

Obviously iPhone's going to have 3G data capabilities at some point. But Steve Jobs, in conversation with WSJ's Walt Mossberg at D2007 today, said a few things that have folks wondering if the Rev A iPhone could, in fact, pack HSDPA compatibility and not just EDGE data as has so far been advertised.

Speaking of AT&T, Jobs said:

Another iPhone Killer? Hawkins to Unveil New Class of Palm Devices

Yeah, yeah, *everything* cell phone is being compared to iPhone. And it'll be like that. For awhile.

According to Palm's Press Release:

"Jeff Hawkins, founder of Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM), will host a live video webcast on Wed., May 30, to describe a new category of mobile device. The webcast will follow the announcement of this new product at the D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif."

Is the LG Prada Verizon's iPhone Killer? Doubtful

A few days ago, USA Today ran a story detailing Apple's five-year iPhone exclusivity agreement with AT&T. Part of the deal is that Apple is forbidden to work on a CDMA variant of their cell phone during that time - in other words, no iPhone for Sprint or Verizon until 2012 (or Apple and AT&T have a bitter break-up, whichever comes first).

Al Gore Rocks THREE 30" Cinema Displays

Wow. All I have to do to upgrade from my 13" MacBook/19" Generic LCD setup is become a former VP of the USA?

No, seriously, Mr. Gore's love of all things Apple is well documented, and I personally grew to like him a whole lot more after watching Inconvenient Truth. And his home office setup rocks ... or is it scary? ... you decide:
